Barbie’s creator’s daughter, Ann Ryan, a Mattel contract designer, has spoken up about her late father’s contribution to the creation of the most well-known doll in the world.
The 67-year-old Ann Ryan asserts, “My father is without a doubt the father of Barbie,” and cites letters and emails she’s written to the business asking for access to internal documents and archives as evidence for her case.
While the firm Mattel, whom she has criticized for erasing her father’s history due to his immoral lifestyle, continues to assert that business co-founder Ruth Handler designed Barbie.
According to DailyMail, Ann claims that her primary goal at this point is to “finally disprove Ruth’s lie about who invented Barbie and was responsible for the doll’s enormous success.” Even though Ruth was fired in 1974 after being found guilty of fraud and making false reports to the Securities and Exchange Commission, Mattel’s website praises Ruth instead of Jack.
She was then given a five-year probationary term, 2,500 hours of community service, and a $57K fine by a federal judge, according to DailyMail.
Ann noted that “there has been well-documented controversy over his relationship with Ruth Handler” and added that in February 2020, she wrote to Ynon Kreiz, chairman and CEO of Mattel, asking to “see what records Mattel has that you would be prepared to disclose with me.”
She uploaded a picture of one of her father’s meticulous Barbie paintings “I was hoping that would catch his eye. He never communicated with me.” Marissa Beck of Mattel’s Global Brand Communications retorted, “We are not able to share any internal documents with people outside the company, but if you have specific factual inquiries we can look into seeing if we can answer them,” saying that she was unable to share any internal documents with third parties.
Jack Ryan suffered a debilitating stroke in 1989; he died by gun suicide on August 13, 1991. Ryan, a former Raytheon employee who had previously created missiles for the Pentagon, started working on his intricate engineering and design, using Bild-Lilli as a model, and the result was what is now known as the well-known Barbie doll.
