She later earned a PhD in government from the London School of Economics (LSE).
Career
Before entering politics, Dodds worked as a lecturer in public policy at King’s College London and as an MEP assistant in Brussels. She was also a senior civil servant in the UK’s Department for Work and Pensions.
In the 2017 general election, Dodds was elected as the MP for Oxford East, defeating the incumbent MP Andrew Smith. She was re-elected in the 2019 general election with an increased majority.
In April 2020, Dodds was appointed as the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer in Keir Starmer’s Shadow Cabinet, replacing John McDonnell. In this role, she is responsible for holding the government to account on economic policy and for developing Labour’s economic strategy.
