Carrie Nuttall was the wife of Neil Peart who was a Canadian musician and writer best known as the drummer and primary lyricist of the rock band Rush. He received numerous awards for his musical performances, including an induction into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1983, making him the youngest person ever so honored.

His drumming was renowned for its technical proficiency, and his live performances for their exacting nature and stamina. Neil passed away on January 7 after a battle with brain cancer, his family said in a statement.

The statement said Peart, their “soul brother”, had been suffering from glioblastoma – a type of brain cancer – for three-and-a-half years. “It is with broken hearts and the deepest sadness that we must share the terrible news that on Tuesday our friend, soul brother and bandmate of over 45 years, Neil, has lost his incredibly brave three-and-a-half-year battle with brain cancer,” the statement says.

She is an American photographer who works primarily in the music and entertainment industry. In 2005, Nuttall published Rhythm and Light, a portrait book capturing intimate photos of Peart in the recording studio.

They both Introduced to each other by Rush photographer Andrew MacNaughtan. Then, she married Neil Peart in 2000 and they lived together until his death.

Peart retired from Rush in 2015 after the band’s final tour, saying the time had come to take himself “out of the game”. During his last years, Peart lived in Santa Monica, California, with his wife, photographer Carrie Nuttall, and daughter Olivia. After a three-year illness, Peart died of glioblastoma on January 7, 2020, at age 67.

Peart died from glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, on January 7, 2020, in Santa Monica, California and the illness had been a closely-guarded secret in Peart’s inner circle until his death. His family announced on January 10.

The Rush website wrote, “It is with broken hearts and the deepest sadness that we must share the terrible news that on Tuesday our friend, soul brother and bandmate of over 45 years, Neil, has lost his incredibly brave three and a half year battle with brain cancer (Glioblastoma). We ask that friends, fans and media alike understandably respect the family’s need for privacy and peace at this extremely painful and difficult time. Those wishing to express their condolences can choose a cancer research group or charity of their choice and donate in Neil’s name.”

Earlier, Peart had been suffering from chronic tendinitis and shoulder problems. In January 2018, Alex Lifeson confirmed that Rush is “basically done”. Peart remained friends with his former bandmates.
