He attended the University of South Carolina and earned three letters as a defensive back for Coach Jim Carlen for the Gamecocks 1976-78. Then, he earned a bachelor’s degree in education from South Carolina in 1979 and he received a master’s degree in education from Ohio University in 1980.

Then, Mark began his coaching career at Ohio University, where he was a graduate assistant. Later, he was named head coach at Cincinnati on December 23, 2003, and became the first head coach in 23 years to lead the school to a winning season in his first season at UC.

On November 27, 2006, he became the 24th head coach at Michigan State. Then, on April 21, 2007, he began his Michigan State career well at Spartan Stadium and Michigan State drew over 25,000 fans to watch the team’s spring scrimmage game.

On October 8, 2011, Dantonio signed a contract extension that made him a “Spartan for life.” In 2014, he earned the second-highest salary among college football coaches, due largely to a retention bonus. On September 21, 2019, with his 110th victory, Dantonio became the winningest head coach in MSU football surpassing Duffy Daugherty.

On February 4, 2020, Dantonio announced he would be stepping down as head coach of the Michigan State football team. Michigan State football coach Mark Dantonio announced his surprise retirement Tuesday on Twitter, and the Spartans are better off for it.

Under Dantonio, Michigan State became one of two Big Ten teams to make the College Football Playoff (though most fans would probably rather forget the result). He won three conference titles and beat Michigan, Penn State and Ohio State plenty of times, sometimes winning stunningly.
