Nelson Perez aka Nelson Jesus Perez was born on June 16, 1961, and from Miami, Florida, USA. He is an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church who was appointed the Bishop of Cleveland on July 11, 2017, and was installed as the 11th Bishop of Cleveland on September 5, 2017.
On January 23, 2020, he was appointed Archbishop of Philadelphia and is to be installed there on February 18. The announcement was made on Thursday by the Vatican and Archbishop Chaput (75) announced his retirement in September.
Nelson Perez Career
NJ. Bishop Perez earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from Montclair State University in 1983. He taught at Colegio la Piedad, a Catholic elementary school in Puerto Rico, before entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia, where he earned Master of Divinity and Master of Arts in Theology degrees in 1988 and 1989.
On May 20, 1989, he was ordained to the priesthood of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and his first assignment after ordination was as a curate at Saint Ambrose Parish, Philadelphia (1989–1993).
Then, he served as assistant director of the Office for Hispanic Catholics (1990–1993); as the founding director of the Catholic Institute for Evangelization (1993–2002); as pastor of Saint William Parish, Philadelphia (2002–2009) and as pastor of Saint Agnes Parish, West Chester.
In 1998, he was named Chaplain to His Holiness, Pope John Paul II, with the title of monsignor. In 2009, he was named a Prelate of Honor by Pope Benedict XVI.
Also, Bishop Perez served as a member of the Diocese of Rockville Centre’s Priest Personnel Board, Presbyteral Council, corporate member of Catholic Health Services, vice-chair of Catholic Charities Board of Directors and member of its Executive and Governance Committees.
Perez was named Archbishop of Philadelphia on January 23, 2020, by Pope Francis, succeeding Archbishop Charles J. Chaput. His installation Mass is scheduled for February 18, 2020.

Archbishop-elect Nelson Perez says, in Spanish, “The Hispanic community in Philadelphia saw me grow up during my time as a seminarian in Philadelphia when I had jet black hair and weighed 50 pounds less. Many of them just call me Fr. Nelson and I will continue to be that for them.”
