Larry Mayer broke first broke this news on Twitter, he wrote “Very sad news: Former #Bears TE Ryan Wetnight lost his battle with cancer this morning, passing away at the age of 49. Ryan spent seven seasons with the Bears from 1993-99. He is survived by his wife, Stacey, and their two sons.”

In 2017, he was diagnosed with cancer and he battled stage 4 cancer for a year and in 2019, he declared that he was cancer-free. A year later, an inoperable tumor developed near his stomach and passed away on May 1, 2020.

Career

Ryan played tight end for eight seasons for the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers, and the Bears signed Ryan as an undrafted free agent out of Stanford University in 1993, and he played with the team until 1999, starting 19 games while playing in 91 during that time.

Furthermore, he finished his career with 175 receptions for 1,542 yards and 9 touchdowns in 101 games. Later, he becomes a real estate broker in California but he was hired as the wide receivers coach at Grace Brethren High School and Ryan spent five years as an assistant and had been coaching under Mike Sanders at Thousand Oaks High before that.
