Tetsu Nakamura was born on September 15, 1946, and from Japan. He was a Japanese medical doctor who devoted his career to improving the lives of Afghans has died, after being injured in an attack in eastern Afghanistan.

On December 4, 2019, he passed away after an attack that also killed five Afghans, including the doctor’s bodyguards, the driver, and a passenger. Gunmen shot Tetsu Nakamura, 73, while he was traveling in a car to monitor a project, officials say.

Hundreds of Afghans posted photographs of Nakamura on their social media pages, condemning the killing and underscoring the esteem in which he was held.

Tetsu Nakamura Career

Nakamura had headed Peace Medical Services, a Japanese charity based in Nangarhar, since 2008. He came to Afghanistan after a Japanese colleague, Kazuya Ito, was abducted and killed.

Recently, he had been granted honorary Afghan citizenship for his decades of humanitarian work in the country. In April, the Afghan president, Ashraf Ghani, granted Nakamura honorary citizenship of Afghanistan. Since 1984, he had worked in the region and initially providing aid in Peshawar, in north-west Pakistan, before opening a clinic in Afghanistan in 1991.

Locals credited Nakamura with transforming vast areas of the desert into fertile farming land. He said on a Japanese public broadcast show that he found inspiration in the teachings of ancient Buddhist philosophy. As of 2016, Nakamura had built or restored 8 additional canals, irrigating 16.000 hectares and supporting the livelihood of 600.000 people in the Gamberi Desert region.
