Tim Skelly was born in 1951 and from USA. He was a video game designer and game programmer who developed arcade games for Cinematronics from 1978 until 1981. On March 2, 2020, he passed away at the age of 69.

His passing was confirmed by the fellow designer Jonathan “Seamus” Blackley in a Tweet and he wrote “RIP my hero, mentor and dear friend Tim Skelly. The first guy to make an arcade fighting game (in3D!), the first guy to do co-op, respawning, and many more. The world is much shittier without Tim in it.”

Tim Skelly Career

Tim was Cinematronics and having a hand in almost every game released since their initial hit, “Space Wars.” He single-handedly created “Starhawk,” “Warrior,” “Rip-Off,” and “Armor Attack,” designed “Star Castle,” and acted as a producer–and did the cabinet art–for “Tailgunner.”

“Warrior” the first fighting game, and “Tailgunner” had 3-D graphics before “Battlezone” and “Star Raiders.” After leaving Cinematronics, he went independent and developed the esoteric “Reactor” for Gottlieb.

His first game for Gottlieb was the esoteric Reactor, and he had it written into his contract that he would get a credit on the title screen for designing the game. From 1978 and 1981, Skelly also spent time working at Strata Group, Vectorbean, Gremlin, and Gottlieb.

Then, he was recruited by the Sega Technical Institute and served as the art director for “Sonic the Hedgehog 2.” From there, Skelly went to work for Microsoft in the software giant’s research division.

He graduated from Northwestern in 1973 with a degree in Radio, Television, and Film.
